Section 7: Technology Professional Development

Our success in integrating technology into the curriculum is predicated on providing teachers, administrators, and support staff with tools they need to manage the learning environment. Adding more computers and showing teachers how to integrate software applications, assistive technology and imaging devices such as cameras and scanners will also facilitate technology integration in the curriculum.

Training

Technology professional development at GCS is sustained and ongoing. It includes coaching, modeling best practices, mentoring, study groups, online tutorials, and Webinars. Training is grounded in concepts of universal design and scientifically based, researched models. To document the training, we will use sign-in sheets identifying:

  • the training instructor/presenter;

  • participants;

  • training topic;

  • training date;

  • training time; and

  • training location.

We will also keep a log of one-on-one mentoring sessions.

Teachers with stronger technology skills continuously mentor colleagues who need advice, software tips and technology integration strategies. The Technology Coordinator works with teachers to provide one-on-one training whenever necessary, especially as new equipment arrives. The Technology Coordinator will also coach two or three teachers who can be available to help others when the Technology Coordinator is off site.

Staff Classroom Technology Goals

Greenfield Center School teachers will use technology to enhance instructional delivery and curriculum content. Students will:

  • Use the Web where appropriate for lesson support, interactive tutorials, virtual field trips, geography enrichment, skill builders, formative assessment, and research.

  • Work with Microsoft Word or AlphaSmart AlphaWord Plus word processors, to complete homework assignments when appropriate. These tools each have a built in spelling checker and thesaurus to support the writing process.

  • Use Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Don Johnston's Co: Writer, and Don Johnston's Draft: Builder when appropriate to support classroom work.

Staff Development Training Objectives

Professional development planning includes an assessment of school and teachers' needs. Administrators and teachers consider their own technology needs based on competencies listed in NETS for Teachers (http://cnets.iste.org/teachers/t_stands.html), the Massachusetts STAR (School Technology and Readiness) Chart (http://www.doe.mass.edu/boe/sac/edtech/star.xls) and the Draft Revised Massachusetts Recommended K-12 Instructional Technology Standards (http://www.doe.mass.edu/edtech/standards/itstand_draft.doc). Using these documents as guidelines, professional development training activities at the school will continue to teach Greenfield Center School teachers how to:

  • Operate computers, digital cameras, scanners, and printers well enough to make use of the educational software the school purchases

  • Integrate computer technology in all aspects of classroom curriculum

  • Use the Internet for information gathering, lesson plans, communicating with experts, and teaching resources

  • Communicate with students, parents, and other teachers via e-mail

  • Use multimedia applications to enhance classroom instruction

  • Take advantage of several free software tools (e.g., Interactivate and ReadPlease) to work with struggling readers or bolster student math scores.
