Section 6: Academic Objectives

Greenfield Center School remains committed to using technology to support academic achievement, realize instructional goals and strengthen academic programs. Technology helps us accomplish these goals by outfitting teachers with a rich assortment of tools to customize instruction, address individual learning styles, and adapt instructional materials to a wide range of ability levels. When effectively integrated into the curriculum, it provides students with increased opportunities for:

  • Real-world math and science applications

  • Writing

  • Publishing

  • Research

  • Engagement

  • Motivation

  • Modeling

  • Learning outside the school day

  • Virtual contact with experts, professionals, and mentors

  • Immediate targeted feedback

  • Model and illustrate complex processes

  • Customize instruction

  • Address individual learning styles

  • Engage students through rich and varied multimedia content (such as audio, video, images, animation)

  • Reinforce content

  • Remediate struggling learners

  • Challenge advanced learners who want to move ahead

  • Gather and disaggregate student performance data to monitor efforts (both individual and class) and inform instruction

  • Communicate with students and parents

Integration of New Technologies into the Curriculum

As evidenced by the current computer inventory at the school, there is significant room to improve the integration of technology in classroom curriculum. By increasing the number of classroom computers and AlphaSmart keyboards, teachers and students will be able to do their work more efficiently.

Since writing the last technology plan, the Center School has purchased several new computers, printers, and AlphaSmart keyboards. For example, the Middle School has benefited from the addition of two 2 new high-end workstations (Hewlett Packard Optiplex 745) and a high-end networked color laser printer (Hewlett Packard LaserJet 2600N). In addition, the school purchased a high-end networked color laser printer for the central office (Hewlett Packard LaserJet 3700N). Elementary school students can print final copies of their classroom projects on this printer to show off their best work. In addition, the school purchased 44 AlphaSmart NEO keyboards for the upper elementary grades. It also purchased 4 mid-range digital cameras to support student work.

There are now 2 scanners in place at the school, as well as an LCD overhead projector for group work. The overhead projector is used regularly use for technology instruction, regular classroom instruction, student presentations, and professional development.

Curriculum and Instruction to Promote Equity in Education

By providing access to more powerful computers and flexible technologies (such as scanners, digital cameras, printers, AlphaSmart keyboards, Web-based resources), and by drawing on software designed to strengthen basic academic skills (e.g., Co: Writer and Draft: Builder for writing support, Keywords for keyboarding and typing, Microsoft Excel for authentic real world math), we provide all GCS students with access to better learning and instruction modalities better suited to their personal learning styles. We are keenly aware of the educational benefits that assistive technology and special needs software can provide struggling learners. We will continue to use technology wherever possible to improve student learning.
