Technology planning has always been an important ingredient in the educational process at Greenfield Center School. A GCS program for managing classroom use of computers, Computers in My Class, began in 1995. This program evolved into a formal technology plan detailing the school’s technology goals and budget for 1996-2002. The plan has gone through two iterations since 2002, first in 2002-05 and then again in 2005-08, in order to guide technology purchases, use, teacher professional development training, and student instruction.
The technology plan outlined in this document picks up where the GCS Technology Plan (2005-08) leaves off, building on sustained efforts to make technology a natural part of everyday instruction. In 2007-2008, a formal technology committee formed to discuss technology needs for teaching and learning at the school. Its members include: Annie Winkler (Teacher, Middles), Chris Sanborn (Teacher Upper Middles-Water, a member of the GCS Board of Directors, and representative from the Board of Directors to the Tech Committee), Erin MacLachlan (Teacher, Uppers), Laura Baker (Executive Director), and Carol S. Holzberg (Technology Coordinator).
Discussions at Tech Committee meetings focus on:
Best practice ways to use technology for teaching and learning,
Professional development technology training needs and options for teachers,
Technology grant opportunities to support classroom instruction,
Ways to recruit parent, student and additional teacher members to the Tech committee
Establishing priorities for school technology purchases
Greenfield Center School teachers will remain actively involved in using computer technology to support classroom teaching and learning. Our educational staff is committed to developing access to technology for all students at the school. However, administrators, teachers, students, and parents all agree that there is a need for upgrading and adding computer equipment in order to expand computer usage in the curriculum areas of language arts, math, science, and social studies.
Everyone recognizes the advantages that technology provides for:
Students who must
organize and communicate ideas
synthesize and conceptualize information;
analyze, manipulate;, and
graph quantitative data;
Teachers who use technology for
Teaching;
Assessment; and
Communications; and
Administrators and staff who rely on technology to:
manage school business;
maintain student records;
file reports;
- track student achievement.
