Dear 3rd Grade Parents,
This reading list offers a sampling of the best and most popular titles across an array of genres and reading levels. While this list is intended as a guide to your child’s reading, it is merely a fraction of the choices available to you. It would be impossible to include all the wonderful books available for children.

We recommend the following online resources, which provide additional reading lists from which to choose books. These websites also include articles about reading and children’s literature.

American Library Association: http://www.ala.org
Children’s Book Council: http://www.cbcbooks.org
International Reading Association: http://www.reading.org
The Horn Book: http://www.hbook.com
School Library Journal’s Best Books: http://www.slj.com

I hope you will set aside time each day to share a book with your child. There is no better support for your child’s academic success than reading aloud to her/him every day. Listening to good children's literature enlarges vocabulary, expands general knowledge, enriches understanding of literary references, and shows how much you care about reading and learning. Picture books are not only meant for younger children; older children can benefit from the richness of illustrations and story lines.

Each 3rd Grader should read at least two books independently. Two reviews are due at the August conferences. A form for the reviews is included (and on the website) for your convenience

Have fun making reading a big part of your summer!
