Summer Work for Students at GCS

It is our tradition to have students do summer work. In the 3rd through 6th grade, that takes the form of reading and writing. In the 7th and 8th grade, we continue to ask them to do reading and we add a project component. Here are the 5th and 6th grade summer assignments for the 2008-2009 year.

Dear NEW 5th Grader Upper Middles-June 11, 2008

Congratulations on starting summer vacation. We hope you really enjoy yourselves, sleeping late, watching lightening bugs, swimming, relaxing. Before you get completely zoned out in summer mode, though, we want to give you your SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT!

We are asking you to read every day this summer, and to complete 3 "Summer Reading Response" forms. Here's why. We believe that keeping up your reading skills over the summer is the most important request we can make. We all know that once we've learned a skill, the best thing to do is to keep exercising it.

The Assignment:
We would like you to read every day this summer, about 20-30 minutes will do. By July 1st, you can go to www.centerschool.net and click on "Class News and Websites," then click "Upper Middles Summer Reading List" to see a book list we offer for suggestions. (This is not an exclusive list, just some ideas to choose from is you'd like.) When you finish a book, fill out a response sheet. We have attached three response sheets for you to use. When you return to school for your August conference, bring the response sheets with you to hand in.

Spread this work out over the course of the summer. It will be more fun that way. Bring your book with you to the lake or tree house. Read when you are on the beach or in your bed at night. Enjoy the long days of light by reading outside, at 8:30 pm! But make sure that you also have time for total relaxation, play and silliness.

A Special Request:
Please don't give your parents any hassle about this assignment. (It's your teachers who have given you summer reading work, not them!) Your parents might be the ones to remind you to do it, but they are only helping us out. Just don't forget we're assigning you homework to stay as smart as you are now and so you're ready to start back up in the fall!

If you have any questions about this assignment, please feel free to call one of us at home. We'll answer any questions you have.

Good luck and have fun! We look forward to seeing you all next fall.

Your teachers!
