Enzensberger, Hans Magnus:The Number Devil Annoyed with his math teacher who assigns word problems and won't let him use a calculator, twelve-year-old Robert finds help from the number devil in his dreams.

Farmer, Nancy: The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm In Zimbabwe in the year 2194, General Matsika's three children are kidnapped and put to work in a plastic mine, while three mutant detectives use their special powers to search for them.

Ferris, Jean: Once Upon a Marigold In the style of The Princess Bride, a hilarious and clever tale follows Christian, who, while spying on the royal family, saves the life of Princess Marigold and falls madly in love with her, but a devious plot devised by her own mother, the Queen, to take over the kingdom threatens to destroy them.

Fleischman, Paul: Bull Run Northerners, Southerners, generals, couriers, dreaming boys and worried sisters describe the glory, the horror, the thrill, and the disillusionment of the first battle of the Civil War.

Fleischman, Sid: The Whipping Boy This humorous adaptation of “The Prince and the Pauper” includes a bratty prince and his whipping boy, who are kidnapped by a couple of bumbling roughnecks.

Forbes, Esther: Johnny Tremain. A young silversmith participates in the dramatic events leading to the Revolutionary War, including the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of Lexington.

Fox, Paula: Western Wind Twelve-year-old Elizabeth is angry about spending the summer in Maine with her grandmother, but nothing can prepare her for what is to come.

Fritz, Jean: Early Thunder Daniel and his widowed father must choose to be either Tory or Whig as growing violence between the groups sets the stage for the Revolutionary War. The Cabin Faced West Ten-year-old Ann overcomes loneliness and learns to appreciate the importance of her role in settling the wilderness of western Pennsylvania.

Funke, Cornelia: The Thief Lord Two brothers Prosper and Bo, having run away from the aunt who plans to adopt the younger one, are sought by a detective hired by their aunt, but they have found shelter with--and protection from--Venice's "Thief Lord."

Giff, Patricia Reilly: Lily’s Crossing During a summer spent at the beach in 1944, Lily’s friendship with Albert, a young Hungarian refugee, causes her to see the war and her own world differently.

Gutman, Dan: Jackie and Me With his ability to travel through time by using baseball cards, Joe goes back to 1947 to meet Jackie Robinson, turning into a Black boy in the process Kid Who Ran for President Denouncing the grownups that have messed up the world and launching his campaign for the presidency, twelve-year-old Judson Moon enjoys unexpected success and wonders if he could win the election.

Haddix, Margaret Peterson: Double Identity After suddenly being taken to live in a new town with an aunt she never met, Bethany Cole looks into her family's dark past, discovers that she is a clone of an older sister who died years ago, and is now being hunted by a dangerous person whose mission is yet unknown.

Hahn, Mary Downing: Stepping on the Cracks Eleven-year-old Margaret gets a new view of the school bully when she finds him hiding his brother, an Army deserter. Time for Andrew Eleven year- old Drew is drawn 80 years into the past to trade places with his namesake, his great-great-uncle Andrew.

Hamilton, Virginia: House of Dies Drear A black family tries to unravel the secrets of their new home which was once a stop on the Underground Railroad. Cousins Concerned that her aged grandmother may die, Cammy is unprepared for the accidental death of another relative.

Hannigan, Katharine: Ida B... and Her Plans to Maximize Fun, Avoid Disaster, and Possibly Save the World Having entered her Black Period, Ida B. Applewood is facing some challenging times and so must turn to her loyal pets, a dedicated teacher, and the beauty of her favorite apple tree to get through it all, in an entertaining coming-of-age tale.

Hart, J.V.: Capt. Hook Arriving at Eton amongst the blue-blooded students, James Matthew is different from his peers in style and presence, yet determined to make a name for himself, he takes on a dangerous persona that precedes him throughout his school years and beyond when he decides to set sail on a ship with a dangerous crew to points unknown.

Hesse, Karen: Music of Dolphins, After rescuing an adolescent girl from the sea, researchers learn she has been raised by dolphins and attempt to rehabilitate her to the human world. Letters from Rifka In letters to her cousin, a young Jewish girl chronicles her family's flight from Russia in 1919 and her own experiences when she must be left in Belgium for a while when the others emigrate to America. Out of the Dust In a series of poems, fifteen-year-old Billie Jo relates the hardships of living on her family's wheat farm in Oklahoma during the dust bowl years of the Depression. Stowaway A fictionalized journal relates the experiences of a young stowaway from 1768 to 1771 aboard the Endeavor which sailed around the world under Captain James Cook.

Hiaasen, Carl: Flush With their father jailed for sinking a river boat, Noah Underwood and his younger sister, Abbey, must gather evidence that the owner of this casino is emptying his bilge tanks into the waters around their Florida Keys home.

Hobbs, Will: The Maze A stowaway on the back of a pick-up truck, fourteen-year-old Rick Walker suddenly finds himself at a dead end in a surreal landscape of red-rock spires and deep canyons called the Maze, in a spine tingling adventure of identity, maturation, and friendship.

Hoeye, Michael: Time Stops for No Mouse When Linka Perflinger, a jaunty mouse, brings a watch into his shop to be repaired and then disappears, Hermux Tantamoq is caught up in a world of dangerous search for eternal youth as he tries to find out what happened to her.

Horvath, Polly: Everything on a Waffle Eleven-year-old Primrose living in a small fishing village in British Columbia recounts her experiences and all that she learns about human nature and the unpredictability of life in the months after her parents are lost at sea.

Hunter, Erin: Warriors Series. In the first book, Into the Wild, the young cat Fireheart leaves his life as a kittypet and joins the wild ThunderClan cats.

Hurwitz, Johanna: Class President. As the fifth grade begins, Julio Sanchez would love to be class president, but he promises to be his best friend’s campaign manager instead.

Ibbotson, Eva: CorneliusSecret of Platform 13 the wizard, Gurkintrude the fey, Hans the ogre, and Odge Gribble the hag only have nine days to search London, locate the kidnapped prince, and return him to the Island before the passageway to their magical kingdom will close, and they will not be able to return for nine years.

Jennings, Richard W. My Life of Crime A sixth grader's discovery of a bedraggled classroom pet parrot sets him on an adventure with real ethical and legal implications.

Kadohata, Cynthia: Kira Kira Chronicles the close friendship between two Japanese-American sisters growing up in rural Georgia during the late 1950s and early 1960s, and the despair when one sister becomes terminally ill.

Kassam, Lou: A Haunting in Williamsburg Jayne is spending the summer with her aunt in Williamsburg, Virginia. She is in for a summer that she will remember forever, a summer that includes ghosts, graveyards, and Mr. Cool.

Kehret, Peg: Earthquake Terror. Jonathan and Abby’s parents have just rushed to the emergency room, leaving their children alone when an earthquake strikes the island where they are camping. The book recounts the children’s survival efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Kerr, Judith: When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit A Jewish girl and her family escape Berlin just before Hitler gains power and spend the next few years as refugees in Switzerland, France and England.

Kidd, Diana: Onion Tears. A little Vietnamese girl tries to come to terms with her grief over the loss of her family and her new life with an Australian family.

Klass, David: California Blue Discovering a beautiful blue butterfly, John is forced to choose between an important cause and his own townspeople when he learns that the butterfly is unique in all the world and that the local mill must be closed in order to save it.

Koertge, Ron: Shakespeare Bats Cleanup When a fourteen-year-old baseball player catches mononucleosis, he discovers that keeping a journal and experimenting with poetry not only helps fill the time, it also helps him deal with life, love, and loss.

Konigsburg, E.L.: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler When Claudia and Jamie run away from home to live in the Metropolitan Museum of Art they encounter a baffling mystery. Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place Upon leaving an oppressive summer camp, twelve-year-old Margaret Rose Kane spearheads a campaign to preserve three unique towers her grand uncles have been building in their back yard for over forty years. View from Saturday Four students, with their own individual stories, develop a special bond and attract the attention of their teacher, a paraplegic, who chooses them to represent their sixth-grade class in the Academic Bowl competition.

Korman, Gordon: No More Dead Dogs Truthful Wallace gives a thumbs-down to a book much to the chagrin of his English teacher, who sentences him to help with a stage version of the book but is unaware that Wallace's plot-improvement suggestions will wind up changing the entire production.

Lawrence, Ian: The Wreckers Shipwrecked after a vicious storm, fourteen-year-old John Spencer attempts to save his father and himself while also dealing with an evil secret about the English coastal town where they are stranded.

L'Engle, Madeleine: Any Title - fantasy/science fiction

Levine, Gail Carson: Dave at Night When orphaned Dave is sent to the Hebrew Home for Boys where he is treated cruelly, he sneaks out at night and is welcomed into the music- and culture-filled world of the Harlem Renaissance. Ella Enchanted In this novel based on the story of Cinderella, Ella struggles against the childhood curse that forces her to obey any order given to her.

Lindbergh, Anne: The People in Pineapple Place Ten-year-old August Brown adjusts to his new home in Washington, D.C., with the help of the seven children of Pineapple Place, invisible to everyone but him.

Lowry, Lois: Number the Stars During the German occupation of Denmark, Annemarie helps shelter a Jewish friend from the Nazis.

Lupica, Mike: Travel Team After he is cut from his travel basketball team--the very same team that his father once led to national prominence--twelve-year-old Danny Walker forms his own team of cast-offs that might have a shot at victory. Heat Pitching prodigy Michael Arroyo is on the run from social services after being banned from playing Little League baseball because rival coaches doubt he is only twelve years old and he has no parents to offer them proof.

McGraw, Jarvis: The Golden Goblet In this novel set in ancient Egypt, a young goldsmith’s apprentice is forced to work as a stonecutter by a cruel stepbrother who is in the business of robbing tombs.

Meehl, Brian: Out of Patience Twelve-year-old Jake Waters cannot wait to escape the small town of Patience, Kansas, until the arrival of a cursed toilet plunger causes him to reevaluate his feelings toward his family and its history.

Myers, Walter Dean: Me, Mop and the Moondance Kid TJ and his younger brother, Moondance, are involved with their friend Mop’s relentless attempts to become adopted and to take the championship from their baseball rivals, the obnoxious Eagles. Harlem Summer Set on the hot city streets of Harlem in 1925, Mark Purvis is thrilled when he is given a simple job by Fats Waller, Harlem's musical genius, yet when the task goes wrong and a gangster ends up on his tail, young Mark thinks his days of impressing Fats with his skills on the saxophone may now be over.

Namioka, Lensey: Yang the Youngest and his Terrible Ear Recently arrived in Seattle from China, musically untalented Yingtao is faced with giving a violin performance to attract new students for his father when he would rather be making friends and playing baseball.

Naylor, Phyllis Reynolds. Beetles Lightly Toasted In this humorous story, fifth grader Andy Moller is determined to win the essay contest on conservation. The Grand Escape Two pampered house cats escape into the wonderful but dangerous outside world of dumpster dining and a ferocious dog, Bertram the Bad.

Newman, Leslea: Hachiko Waits Loyal to the end, Hachi the dog, unaware that his owner had died, waited at the train station every day for the next ten years in the hopes of seeing his beloved owner come off the train like he had done so many times in the past.

Nimmo, Jenny: Charlie Bone series. Charlie Bone’s life changes when he discovers he can hear people in photographs and he is sent to Bloor’s Academy for the gifted.

Nolan, Han: Face in Every Window After the death of his grandmother, who held the family together, teenage JP is left with a mentally challenged father and a mother who seems ineffectual and constantly sick, and he feels everything sliding out of control.

Nye, Naomi Saihab: Habibi When fourteen-year-old Liyana Abboud moves with her family from St. Louis to Jerusalem, she encounters an entirely new life, exploring Jerusalem, making mischief with her brother, and building a relationship with a Jewish boy.

Oppel, Ken: Airborn Set in the early twentieth century in a world where the airplane hasn't been invented, a young boy takes to the skies aboard an airship where he plays an important role in fierce battles that are fought high in the sky.

Paolini, Christopher: Eragon When fifteen-year-old Eragon comes to learn that he is a gifted Dragon Rider, he realizes that his destiny is to fight the evil powers that will bring complete destruction to the Empire and so leaves his quiet life as a farm boy to succeed in his one true mission in life.

Park, Barbara: Skinnybones Alex’s sense of humor helps him to get along with the school braggart, make the most of his limited athletic ability and small size, and cope with life.

Park, Linda Sue: A Single Shard Tree-ear, a thirteen-year-old orphan in medieval Korea, lives under a bridge in a potters' village, and longs to learn how to throw the delicate celadon ceramics himself. Project Mulberry While working on a project for an after-school club, Julia, a Korean American girl, and her friend Patrick learn not just about silkworms, but also about tolerance, prejudice, friendship, and patience. Patneaude, David: Someone Was Watching Thirteen-year-old Chris Barton views a video that he made on the day his younger sister disappeared and finds a clue to her whereabouts that leads him on a journey halfway across the country.

Paulsen, Gary: Any Title - realistic fiction

Peck, Richard: A Long Way from Chicago Year after year, Joey and Mary Alice go to visit their Grandma in her quiet town in Illinois, but with every summer that passes, things become increasingly odd in this collection of amusing adventure stories.

Philbrick, Rodman: The Young Man and the Sea After his mother's death, twelve-year-old Skiff Beaman decides that it is up to him to earn money to take care of himself and his father, so he undertakes a dangerous trip alone out on the ocean off the coast of Maine to try to catch a huge bluefin tuna.

Pierce, Tamora: Any Title - fantasy

Pinkwater, Daniel: Fat Men from Space In this humorous story, William receives bulletins about an invasion from outer space through the filling in his tooth. He’s taken captive aboard a spacecraft of fat spacemen who plan to invade Earth.

Pitts, Paul: Racing the Sun Brandon Rogers begins to learn some new lessons about heritage and love when his Navajo grandfather moves from the reservation into Brandon’s room.

Polacco, Patricia: Pink and Say Pinkus Ayless, a black Union solider, and Sheldon Curtis, a white Union solider, develop a wonderful friendship that tests their courage as they run away from Southern troops.

Pratchett, Terry: The Wee Free Men A young witch-to-be named Tiffany teams up with the Wee Free Men, a clan of six-inch-high blue men, to rescue her baby brother and ward off a sinister invasion from Fairyland. Only You Can Save Mankind Twelve-year-old Johnny Maxwell endures tensions between his parents, watches television coverage of the Gulf War, and plays a computer game called Only You Can Save Mankind, in which he is increasingly drawn into the reality of the alien ScreeWee.

Raskin, Ellen: The Westing Game Each of the sixteen people invited to the reading of a very strange will are given $10,000, a set of clues, and the chance to become a millionaire.

Riordan, Rick: The Lightning Thief After learning that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea, Percy Jackson is transferred from boarding school to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods, and becomes involved in a quest to prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.
