Summer Work 8th Grade-Uppers

Dear 8th Grade Uppers,

Hopefully your summers are off to a great start!  We teachers have put together some summer work for you; this work includes reading, writing, and a project.

When you have checked out your reading assignment on this page, click here for your project assignment.

READING ASSIGNMENT

Please choose any three (3) of the following books to read:

The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place, by E.L. Konigsburg
Into Thin Air, by John Krakauer
What the Moon Saw, by Laura Resau
Summerland, by Michael Chabon
The Candyshop War, by Brandon Mull

1.  Go to the bookstore and purchase your three books.  Feel free to read more than three if you so desire.

2.  Read each book.

3. Answer the following questions, in writing, for each book.  All answers should be in paragraph form and proofed for spelling and grammar.

  • What would you say is the theme, or the main idea, of this book? Keep in mind that there may be several themes.
  • Write in detail about one important conflict that occurs in this book.  How do the characters work together to resolve this conflict?  Does the conflict get resolved?
  • Name three of the characters in this book, and describe what kind of people they are.  Do any of the characters change the way they act or think throughout the course of the book?  Describe this change and write about what caused it to happen.
  • Would you recommend this book to a friend?  Why or why not?

Have a wonderful summer, and feel free to contact any Uppers teacher if you have questions or concerns.  See you in the fall.
