Dear Families,
The Seed Store Project
is one that furthers our mission and supports our academic work. We seek
to integrate the arts into our studies. Our
belief is that there is art in science, beauty in nature, awe as a foundation
of scientific inquiry. Our children are skilled observers and creative
interpreters of information. Please take note of the work that has gone
into this project.
The Greenfield Center School Parent Council Seed Store Project
The Parent Council spent many years trying to find a fundraiser to fund
school projects and field trips that would fit with the unique philosophy
and mission of the school. We wanted a project that would bring together
the interests of the parents, the talents of the children, and the
skills of the teachers. We wanted to develop and sell a product that
would bring families together and would be healthy for children, families
and communities. Working with the support of FEDCO seeds,
we found such a project and launched the Greenfield Center School Parent
Council
Seed Store Project in 2002-2003. We have found a project that taps
into parents' and children's love of gardening, nature and plants,
and that spreads the love of gardening in our communities.
Art
Work:
Teachers work with the Parent Council on the Seed Store by setting aside
class time for kids to draw the flowers and vegetables that will decorate
the packets.
These wonderful drawings show the love children have for plants. The drawings are often beautiful and humorous. Even pre-teens come through when called upon if a drawing is urgently needed. The children clearly understand that their work depicting these plants is important. They are aware that a powerful drawing will sell many seeds.
A dedicated parent scans every child's drawing into her computer to produce a label. Each seed variety has a label designed by several children. Two packets of each child's work are set aside so that they can be purchased by the family of the artist. Last year posters were created using assorted designs. This year place mats are planned and will be sold at a reasonable price.
Seed
Store:
When seeds are finally packaged, labeled and organized, the Seed Store
opens for business. Kids help Parent Council members to sell seeds.
Seeds are also arranged in painted clementine boxes and signed out
to families to sell in their own communities. Parent Council seeks
out public places to sell seeds, including the Iris Society, Green
Fields Market and the Farmers Market.
Again, I want to acknowledge the hard work of many parents to make this project work. The packets are beautiful! You can view samples below
