Mission Statement

Preamble: Central to public education is the preparation of all youth in the skills, knowledge and habits of heart and mind essential to sustaining and expanding a democratic, just, and equitable society.

  1. Decisions are centered as much as possible in community that lives with those decisions

  1. The school is a small community in which all members are known respected and valued

  1. School structures reflect an ethic of high expectations for all members of the school community

  1. Arts, character and environmental stewardship are all seen as essential parts of education

  1. The school fosters critical thinking and socially engaged intelligence through deep consideration of multiple perspectives.

  1. The school's pedagogical approach involves students actively in constructing meaning, creative thinking, inquiry original research and [project –based learning (engagement, ownership)

  1. Assessment is seen as an ongoing process, using multiple formats and perspectives, including self and peer critique

  1. Schooling is explicitly connected to the real world through authentic projects and audiences and through service e and outside the school

  1. Content and skills are important to us but there is not a monolithic approach when it comes to kids (insert before #7 assessment)
